You Don’t Have to Feel Determined to Be Determined

Determination is a mindset, not a feeling. You can’t base your actions on what you “feel” like doing. Base your actions on what you’re determined to do no matter what you’re feeling. You don’t have to feel determined, to be determined.

The way to be determined is to show a strong work ethic. Many people go to work every day not “feeling like it.” Despite their lack of desire to go to work, they do it anyway. That ability to go to work in the absence of any desire is called a strong work ethic.

It’s valuing effort over feelings.

An OCD loop many people don’t recognize they’re having is the Feeling Loop. “Why aren’t I feeling more…” “What does this feeling mean?” “I don’t feel like doing that.” “I’m not feeling afraid of this thought anymore. Does that mean I’m evil?” All of this monitoring of feelings is nothing more than an OCD loop.

Remember, when you recognize an OCD loop your job is to shrug at it. Not feed it!

Your feelings aren’t part of the solution, they’re part of the problem. You don’t have to feel (problem) determined to be (solution) determined.

Today’s challenge is to let a mindset of determination drive your behavior no matter how you feel, what do you stand to lose/gain? If you value effort not feelings, what are the risks? What are the benefits?

This is Day 2 of the 30 day challenge! Do you accept?

  1. I still have trouble with not being able to trust my feelings. I do get the determination piece, because I’ve pushed through it many times. But all feelings? I still don’t buy it. Maybe all feelings that are fear-based, but not the others, like love, joy, appreciation, etc. Anyway, I will be ignoring my OCD-based feelings today and doing two of the chores I hate the most: working on my taxes and cleaning the house.

    1. If you are a junkie for “feeling just right”…always monitoring your feelings, then you’d find this more applicable to you! Glad you’re letting determination motivate you today!

  2. This is especially important for me to learn. Even when I’m not in a storm, I struggle with low motivation and procrastination. But life isn’t about only doing what you feel like doing, it’s about doing what needs to be done! I’ll keep this in mind today when I resist procrastination and be productive. Also, I will also work on not monitoring feelings because OCD loves to trick me into this loop!

  3. I am so wrapped up in feelings. This blog helps me and reminds me that feelings are not the solution, just the problem if I live by them. Thanks for the other comments they help me too. Its so good not to be alone in this and know that hope gets bigger every day.

  4. One thing that I and I’m sure many others have experienced is a lack of motivation. The thing about motivation is that it comes and goes; motivation is not always there for you. I suppose that’s what’s wonderful about determination, though. If you’re really determined, it never goes away! Determination can be there for you even when motivation is not. They are similar ideas, but they are not the same. Lastly I’m reminded of this quote that I’ve sent you before and I think about often: “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved” and always will solve the problems of the human race.” -Calvin Coolidge
